Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cayce District Curriculum

In Mathematis classes, students practice fewer concepts at a greater depth than in the past. They master each standard to a greater degree. Students spend more time studying a particular unit in one school year so that they only have to review it quickly in the next class and are able to retain the skill over the long term. For instance, when students begin early investigations into patterns they are beginning to develop the skills necessary for algebra.

English Language Arts teachers provide a variety of texts for students to study including both non-fiction and literature. They practice reading and writing skills that can be used in the other content areas, such as science and social studies. Students are taught how to use different features of texts to understand more and how to recognize the goals an author has in writing a work. These skills will help them to be successful as they enter college or the workforce.

Chalk Talk: Reading as a Family

Reading skills are vital for success in academics and the workforce, so it is important to build a strong foundation at home. Set aside time several days a week to read together as a family. If member of the family are of similar ages, reading aloud together can provide you with a shared memory of a book everyone enjoyed. If you fear it would be too difficult to hold everyone’s interest with the same book, just spend time reading together silently. While you may not be sharing what you are reading, sitting in the same room together can create closeness for the family. Modeling reading in front of your child can help them develop the desire to be a lifelong learner.
