Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cedar Grove District Curriculum

The curriculum of the Cedar Grove Schools was developed to ensure that all students have equal access to educational opportunities that will provide them with the tools they need to be successful. Each subject area curriculum is research-based and is aligned with the recommendations of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, as well as the Common Core State Standards.

The science curriculum includes a comprehensive study of evolution and biological diversity. The elementary school curriculum focuses on identifying the traits that are passed down from parents to offspring, such as the color of eyes or hair. Students also learn how environmental influences cause organisms to adapt. The middle school curriculum explores how animals that don’t adapt go extinct. An examination of the features shared between living and fossilized animals is also undertaken in order to determine a line of descent. In high school, students analyze why novel traits might arise in a given population. Students also examine how closely related species are based on common traits, DNA and amino acid sequences.
