Centralia District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students in the Centralia School District receive curriculum and instruction written around the Washington State Standards in all core subjects. The district has programs in place to service the learning needs of advanced learners, English Language Learners, and students who require individualized instruction. High school curriculum focuses on content and graduation requirements for all students. Students work through two years of composition classes in English, the algebra series in Math, and biology in Science. The rest of the units needed for graduation in these areas are completed by electives chosen by the student and their parents.

We currently cover the following Centralia-area school district: Centralia School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Centralia District Curriculum

Elementary students start in kindergarten learning fundamental skills in Reading, Writing, Math, and Science and continue to develop these skills through sixth grade. During the early years, students are also taught to explore and experience the material they are working with. The focus of the curriculum in the elementary grades is primarily skill development, though content knowledge is taught in Science and Social Studies.

In middle and high school, students begin to differentiate their own curriculum with electives and leveled math and English classes. Students in middle school are able to take math classes up to and including Geometry, depending on their scores on their fifth grade math assessment. High school students all take freshman and sophomore compositions classes, but are able to take Honors courses if they choose. The high school also offers reading and writing labs for struggling students so that they are able to develop critical reading and communication skills.

  • Comprehensive Music - Students in grades K-12 enrolled in Centralia schools take music classes. In primary elementary grades, music education alternates with physical education and students take one half year of each. Chalk Talk: Developing Independent Thinkers

Parents can have a voice in helping teens become sensible decision-makers. The first thing to remember is that parents are the biggest role model for teens. A certain amount of empathy is needed, so parents need to be aware of their vocabulary when talking with their teen. Instead of ordering the teen to complete something, or to stop an action, parents should try to use feeling words that imply empathetic feelings. These children also need to know that they can come and talk with parents when they have difficult decisions. They need someone to help them realize that they do know the best choices. When told the choices, write them down and look them over one by one until a final decision is made. There will also be times when a teen turns to a friend for advice. Parents need to make sure that the path is open for communication, even when the friend is consulted. This way the best choice can be made from their experiences. The friend may have given good advice, but the child needs to realize that ultimately the decision is up to them.
