Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chadron District Curriculum

Within the Mathematics curriculum, the students develop their understanding of multiplication using whole numbers. The teachers begin by showing them that multiplication is the repeated adding of numbers, and usually this concept is begun using objects and drawings. The students, when learning how to multiply, begin to explain relationships between multiplication and division. They then increase their understanding by giving explanations of factors and products.

In Reading, standards include listening skills. Developing and applying active listening skills can be challenging for some, but this is vital to having success in learning. The students practice listening skills that are required for various situations and methods, such as one-on-one, various group sizes, electronic communication, and listening to multiple audiences. The students also, when finished listening, must ask questions to have clarification, and then summarize the main ideas.

Chalk Talk: What Is ELL?

ELL stands for English Language Learners. This term is formally known as ESL, or English as a Second Language, in many districts. ELL students are students that have a primary language other than English in the home. The students that receive ELL services meet with an instructor regularly to get support in their classes so they may keep pace of learning in all subject areas. Many ELL students can receive accommodations on testing, such as read-aloud or small group testing. The amount of service time they have depends on how developed their English skills are.
