Chalk Talk: Two-Way Dual-Language Program

By participating in a two-way dual language program, both native speakers and new-language learners have the opportunity to be a first-language model and a second-language learner. The University of Minnesota’s Center for Advanced Research of Language Acquisition (CARLA) states that an “Academically challenging learning environment is provided to bring children from two different language groups together to learn from and with each other in an integrated setting.” In order for a school to qualify as a two-way dual-immersion program, the minimum of one-third of each language group is necessary. Eastern Carver Country Schools’ La Academia, meets those requirements and Kindergarten instruction begins with 90% of the core academic instruction in Spanish and the remainder in English. Eventually, the percentages shift and both languages will be taught 50% of the day.
