History classes evaluate historical texts and accounts to help students gain an understanding and awareness of these texts’ significance. Students then can apply their significance to the modern world. In literature classes, students study nonfiction texts. They write analytical essays and use information derived from the texts to support their theses. Mathematics classes utilize key concepts which create the foundation for more advanced studies later. Science classes focus on a study of the physical world and engineering concepts. All classes apply their lessons to real-world situations when possible.

Chalk Talk: Anatomy of an Application

A college application is a complicated thing, made up of several different elements. The application, itself, is essential, but it is, at heart, mostly biographical information. The demographic information might have some slight bearing on the outcome of a selection committee’s decision, but ultimately this information is less-likely to sway a committee one way or the other. The essay/s, which are included in the application, are essential, though. These brief writings give the selection committee insight into the applicant’s personality, qualities, involvement, and interests. One integral piece of the packet is the transcript, which is probably the single most important part. This is used as one of the major determiners of how successful this applicant might be in college. Standardized test scores, likewise, are used to determine future success. A resume tells the committee how involved the student is outside of classes and sheds light on how engaged and intellectually curious the student might be.
