Cheney District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Cheney School District follows curriculum written to ensure students are meeting the Washington State Standards in all of the core subjects. In elementary school, students learn the basic skills in Math and English Language Arts that will allow them to be successful in the upper grade curriculum, college and career. Students begin with letter recognition, sound recognition, number sense, and science investigation skills in kindergarten and add to these skills throughout elementary school. The high school experience is expanding their offerings and students are also able to enroll in academic enrichment programs that support their learning goals and interests. These require a strong base in the foundational content and skills developed in Math, Science, and English Language Arts.

We currently cover the following Cheney-area school district: Cheney Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cheney District Curriculum

Students in middle and high school are able to diversify their education to meet their interests and needs. Middle school students are given the option to take accelerated Math and English Language Arts classes where they learn to apply the foundational skills learned in elementary school to all written content. In high school, electives are offered in all core curriculum areas and students are eligible to enroll in these elective classes once they have shown proficiency in basic skills through Algebra 1 and freshman composition.

In their first two years of high school, students continue to apply their skills in composition classes, Algebra and Geometry. The English/Language Arts program is very comprehensive and encourages students to select classes at the upper levels that they are interested in, making them more successful in the courses and the program. Two years of science must also be taken in the students first two years of high school. Juniors and seniors are able to pick electives in the core subjects to focus on interests and complete their graduation requirements.

Chalk Talk: Developing Writing Skills

Each child has assignments that require writing skills. Some may feel that they do not have these skills so they give up before they begin. Parents can help encourage writing in several ways. First of all encourage the child to read because reading and writing are connected and by reading topics of interest, the child can see that it is possible to write on topics they enjoy. Parents should also make sure that the child has all the supplies they need to become writers including pens, papers, paper, post-it notes, and journals. Along with the journal, encourage the child to write in a journal daily, even if it is pictures or only a sentence or two, it helps them to see that writing is not difficult. Finally, model writing for the child by writing thank-you letters, lists or outlines for projects. By including these items in the child’s life writing may become more natural for them.
