Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Claremore District Curriculum

In Language Arts, students are exposed to visual images to discover how people that make images of various formats represent meaning. Images are used to compliment text, whether informational, entertaining, or persuasive. The students are taught how to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction (fact vs. opinion) in media and advertising of many forms. The students also compare and contrast print with visual media, such as photography or film.

In Mathematics, students are taught to use various forms of measurement, such as measuring in units of inches and centimeters to determine length, using a scale to measure for weight, and using liquid measures to compare volume in different containers. Measurement is an integral part of mathematics, and it is also used in Science as well when students are doing a multitude of experiments and learning about science concepts. Most of the skills taught are used across subject areas and are tied to real-world applications.
