Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clay District Curriculum

The Jefferson County School System is a large school system that is very effective in attaining student achievement. Students graduate
from the school system and become successful adults. The core curriculum of Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science
are complemented by technology in the delivery of instruction.

In Language Arts, students are taught how to use a variety of skills, such as comprehension, phonemic awareness, and fluency. In the teaching
of fluency, several distinct areas are addressed and delivered as an integral aspect of reading lessons, such as allowing for
repeated readings, looking and studying as to why words are connected, using appropriate pausing and speed, and using interesting
reading materials to be reread often by the students. Students begin to develop the ways in which to decode meaning, build comprehension,
and analyze the meaning of the material.

Chalk Talk: What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a computer program that has a database of hundreds of books on a variety of levels. The students read the books that they want to be tested on, and then get on the computer program and take a test. Each book test is rated by level of difficulty, and some are worth more points than others. The many Accelerated Reader tests assess the students on the comprehension of the books, and gives them a score. Students enjoy this program as it motivates them to read more books of their choice.
