Clearwater District and Curriculum

The Pinellas County Schools Department of Curriculum and Instruction designs the PreK-12 curriculum, trains teachers how to use it effectively, and conducts research into the trends in curriculum and instruction. Curriculum is aligned with the Alabama State Standards and centers on essential knowledge and critical thinking. The elementary math curriculum is based upon the Common Core State Standards. These standards require that students understand and solve problems, think quantitatively, reason within themselves and with others, demonstrate an understanding of math, use available tools effectively, observe details, recognize structure, and establish logical patterns of thinking. With the solid foundation gained in grades K-5, students expand their knowledge of math through middle school and high school. There they learn about algebra, geometry, calculus, trigonometry, and statistics.

We currently cover the following Clearwater-area school districts: Pinellas County Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clearwater District Curriculum

Pinellas County Schools’ elementary science curriculum upholds scientific thinking as necessary to survival. Students learn to make observations, ask thoughtful questions, conduct experiments, interpret data, make explanations, and communicate about what they have learned. The curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and incorporates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and SEAMS (Students Engaged in Authentic Math and Science).

The elementary reading and language arts curriculum requires that teachers spend at least 90 minutes per day on word work, reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. These activities help students to develop skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. To teach writing, teachers use direct instruction, quiet writing, conferencing, and sharing. Literacy is further expanded in the middle and high school years through literature, journalism, creative writing, composition, and advanced English.
