Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clinton District Curriculum

Clinton students take part in a math curriculum that culminates with the study of geometry in high school. Students examine rigid motions, including translations, reflections, and rotations. Learners investigate proof theorems, and use them to solve problems that involve a number of geometric shapes, including lines, triangles, and quadrilaterals. Similarity of triangles is studied as well. Learners identify criteria for establishing similarity, and use those criteria to solve mathematical problems.

The middle school science curriculum in Clinton revolves around the study of earth/space science, life science, and environmental science. Common to each specific subject area is the development of scientific knowledge and skills needed to practice scientific study. Students learn how to design and implement simple scientific studies, including how to gather and analyze data. Chalk Talk: Essential Reasons to Study History

The study of history is much broader in scope than an examination of people and events from long ago. By studying history, students are able to make connections between those people and events from the past with what’s going on in the world today. In that regard, history provides context and meaning to the modern era. The framework within which history is studied also provides an organized and cohesive method for examining world events. Students no longer view them as isolated events, but rather part of a whole. The increases in cultural understanding are another valuable benefit of studying history. Students are able to investigate other peoples and gain an appreciation for others’ worldview. History allows for the development of respect and multicultural understanding, both of which are vitally important in the modern world. By examining the mistakes and triumphs of the past, students are also better equipped to make positive decisions in their own lives.
