Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clinton District Curriculum

In the early years of the children’s education, they learn how to identify the letters of the alphabet, and then they learn how to place these letters together to form words and sentences. By the time these children reach the junior high, they are tackling the basics of writing reports and essays. They also learn how to find information in reference books and by using technology to conduct internet research. In high school, students continue developing a writing process and learn how to defend their ideasby using reason and evidence.

By the end of the first grade, each child learns fundamentals as they also receive an introduction to geometry as they learn to recognize and draw basic shapes. When they are in junior high, they learn how to work with radical and integer exponents, as well as square and cubed roots. High school allows students diversity as they choose the mathematics classes to take. They can choose to focus on algebra, geometry, or statistics and probability. In statistics class, they learn about categorical and quantitative data and how to make inferences with such data.

Chalk Talk: When a Child Has Trouble at School

It is easy to overreact when a child is in trouble at school, however, take a moment after hearing the news and reflect on these few thoughts. First, this is not about the parent. When the school makes contact, it is so that they can work with the parent to find a beneficial solution for the child. Next, remember not to blame the school or the teacher. Instead of looking at them as the enemy, look at them as a source of assistance. Also, when a child complains about a teacher, do not join them, instead sit in on a class and communicate with the teacher. This way, when the child starts complaining, the parent can put an end to it by presenting the solution for the child.
