College District and Curriculum

The Fairbanks North Star Borough District curriculum is aligned to Alaska’s State Content and Performance Standards and student proficiency in their core subjects is measured through formal and standardized assessments. Parents of elementary students can consult the district’s Parent Guide to Elementary Curriculum for specifics about what students in grades K-6 should know and be able to do in each subject area.

We currently cover the following College-area school district: Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the College District Curriculum

Mathematical content knowledge and reasoning ability is the primary focus of students’ mathematics coursework. Students develop the skills to solve problems using appropriate tools and methods. In recent years, with an increased focus on drawing students into the fields of Math and Science, courses like the Geometry of Art have been developed.

In Science, students actively develop questions and use scientific methods to find answers. Students in different grade levels may receive enhanced instruction in specialized fields through collaborations with community and university partners.

In English/Language Arts students learn how to process written and oral information, and to formulate clear written responses. Elementary school students learn fundamentals of language and decoding strategies. In middle school, students read for knowledge and meaning and develop processes for writing.
