Colleyville District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Colleyville Schools help to create community learners out of their students by creating a curriculum that is based on the standards set down in the Texas Essential Knowledge and skills. The students are able to take the skills they learn in all their subjects in school to become problem-solvers in their post-secondary pursuits. In order to help students understand what type of academic and career experience they wish to have, there are also electives and extracurriculars that connect students with their future.

We currently cover the following Colleyville-area school district: Grapevine Colleyville Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Colleyville District Curriculum

The mathematics curriculum at Colleyville Schools helps students to learn how to use mathematics in everyday life. The students begin by learning about the different shapes and angles by the time they graduate they are able to find more than 20 different shapes and angles in the world around them. They also learn about the importance of famous mathematicians in their lives. When the students are young they may experience statistics by playing board or classroom games but in high school they take this same subject and find about how much a corn field will yield.

Students learn how to apply the skills they learn in English in everyday life, also. In elementary students learn how to write paragraphs for different purposes. When they are in high school students are able to take information they obtain by interviewing other students and create a narrative. They also examine poetry for examples of syntax, diction and imagery that they are then able to use in their own creative works.

Chalk Talk: Elementary Math Expectations

In second grade math class, students build upon the skills they developed in kindergarten and first grade. They also learn some new skills such as ordering, labeling and how to express answers to problems. They learn how to use mathematical language such as minus or subtraction. They also learn fractions and spatial relationships. Applicability is emphasized so that students are able to use mathematic insight in their own life, and many examples that connect to home and play are used to gain that understanding. Students also use manipulatives and work on skill-enhancing projects to prepare them for the slightly more complex work in 3rd grade. By fourth grade, most students will be assessed on their math proficiency, and generally these tests are based on learning during all years of elementary school. Each state may have slightly different standards, but these are the basics that are learned nationally.
