Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Columbia District Curriculum

Language Arts teaches students reading, writing and communication skills used in all aspects of learning. In writing, basic skills, such as using proper punctuation and proper word usage are also emphasized. To improve interest, students learn how to vary the style and pattern of sentences, while eliminating wordiness and redundancy. Students also engage in small group activities that promote effective listening skills. Participants learn to collaborate with others and offer suggestions to integrate various viewpoints. Students are also required to present information to others in a clear and concise manner.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium provides assessments. These next-generation assessments are aligned to the Common Core State Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics for grades 3-8 and 11. That means students in all states will be taught to the same high standards. Columbia School District provides rigorous programs to ensure all students excel as individuals.
