The Broward County K-5 Language Arts/Reading Curriculum goes beyond teaching students how to read words on a page. It teaches them how to process what they are reading. Chalk Talk: The Role of Assessments in Education

Assessments are increasingly common and students will take formal assessments, as well as informal assessments, throughout each school year. When assessments are given early in the year, they are often designed to see what students know and helps teachers plan instruction. Mid-term assessments check in that student learning is up to pace and mid-term projects give students a chance to harness their personal interests to follow through a unit. End-of-year exams gauge student proficiency in the expectations for learning of their grade level and provide information about the effectiveness of instruction for a whole grade.
