Cortland District and Curriculum

The Cortland Enlarged City School District (CECSD) has set a goal to achieve a top fifty school district rating in the State of New York in terms of academic achievement, educational opportunity and overall efficiency. Through the implementation of the Common Core Curriculum, which prepares students for higher learning and advanced work opportunities, students are offered the necessary instruction to perform at a high academic level.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cortland District Curriculum

In Math, students in the elementary years are taught the basics of the Common Core Curriculum Framework including number operations, basic arithmetic, and computational skills, geometry, algebra, and measurement. Later, students take more advanced coursework in algebra, geometry, and may take advanced classes including Trigonometry, Algebra II, and Calculus.

In Language Arts, all students learn command of the English language through reading, writing, speaking and listening. At the middle and high school level students tackle more complex reading material and learn to write detailed and referenced research reports using skills of critical analysis and research evaluation. All students who graduate from a New York State High School are required to take State Regents exams in Science, Math, English, US History, and Global History.

Keeping Informed: Recent Cortland Educational News

  • Blue Ribbon School - Parker Elementary School in the Cortland Enlarged City School District has become a Blue Ribbon School, a distinction which was awarded to only 19 public schools in the State of New York in 2012. The Blue Ribbon School Program is a federal program run by the U.S. Department of Education and is awarded to schools where student scores have increased significantly in academic areas.
  • Boys Basketball - The Cortland High School boy’s basketball team recently won over the basketball team from Jamesville-DeWitt. The Cortland team is ranked 18th in the series but was able to pull out a score of 82 versus 66 scoring ahead in the second half to make the win.
  • Girls Basketball - The Cortland High School girl’s basketball team presented the Indian River High School girls basketball team with their first loss of the season. Showing their usual teamwork, Cortland surged ahead in the game ending with a final of 40-36.

The kid oriented site is the answer to a parent’s dream of an educational but fun experience for their children that will keep them occupied for hours.
