Cottage Grove District and Curriculum

Cottage Grove Schools made sure to put the student first when they developed their curriculum based on the Common Core State Standards and mixed with the creativity of the educators. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cottage Grove District Curriculum

The Science curriculum at Cottage Grove School allow for many hands-on projects. In kindergarten the students may watch tadpoles grow or they may plant and watch sunflower seed change from a seed to a plant. Later these students learn how to turn salt water into fresh water while they study the water cycle. Designing a craft that floats helps them understand how things sink or float and magnetism is reinforced by having the students fish for paperclips with magnets. Through these hands-on activities, along with many others students learn that exploration of the world can be done by students like them.

Educators at Cottage Grove schools help Social Studies come to life for the students. Instead of learning dates and names, these students take field trips to learn about community helpers. They also explore the reasons for Imperialism and write speeches on Civil Rights. These students, after graduation, will have learned how to become citizens that will take action and make effective decisions, as needed.

They also learn to arrange items of a series in order. Other processes they learn include planning and conduction science experiments, creating a hypothesis, reading and understanding graphs, charts and tables and communication of outcomes of an experiment. The concepts children learn include motion, electricity, adaptations of organisms, roles or organisms in living systems, learned traits versus inherited traits, erosion, weathering and sedimentation and fossils. By now, these students have made a big step into the world of scientists.
