The standards for ELA are also applied to most academic courses to provide a coordinated approach to literacy. In English and Language Arts, students learn how to read, write, listen and speak in a coherent and progressive approach. There is an emphasis placed on students developing strong skills in critical analysis and research. Students are introduced to both great literature and informational text so that they are prepared for the different types of reading material they may encounter as adults.

In Mathematics, students focus in on the learning fundamental math subjects including computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics, and proportional reasoning. The rigorous curriculum includes developing problem solving skills and the ability to apply what they have learned to higher math and to life situations. A program of continuous improvement in the instructional process assists in providing students with the skills they need to be successful in advanced education and in career pursuits.

Chalk Talk: Understanding Human Anatomy

There are now interactive online resources that students can use to learn about human anatomy. At the Visible Human Project, a system of knowledge compiled by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), students can view digitized three dimensional parts of the human body. The project includes more than 9,000 body sections. The site includes visuals of both the female and male body. The easiest way to use the Visible Human Project site is what is called the Guided Tour to the Visible Human. Clicking on each section produces an animation of a particular section of the body like you are traveling on a speeding capsule moving through the body. The full color animation allows students to differentiate individual organs, body systems, and bones. You can look at one section of the body such as the abdomen and follow how the liver lies in the body, being mostly on the right side but with a small section running over to the left side of the body under the diaphragm. The moving visual lets students easily see where each organ is situated within the body and in relation to other organs.
