Chalk Talk: What Does the United States Department of Education Do?

The Department of Education does not run any schools but they do have an important job. This agency is responsible for distributing federal tax dollars to school districts, collecting data on student performance, and enforcing civil rights laws in our schools. This organization is run by the Education Secretary who reports directly to the President. Without the Department of Education, it would be very hard for federal assistance to reach local schools.
