Chalk Talk: How Games Facilitate Learning

Games-based learning is certainly nothing new. It has long been a staple of K-12 classrooms, but with modern technology, games-based learning has taken on an even more important role. One of the primary benefits of this type of learning is that it keeps kids engaged and active in the learning process. This is true even when kids are studying subjects that are not among their favorite. By combining these studies with games, and further with technology, student engagement increases even more. There are essential higher-order skills that students gain as part of game play as well, including problem solving and critical thinking. The processes of gathering information, exploring alternatives, and putting hypotheses to the test also promote the understanding of logic. And because game-play keeps students engaged, they are far more likely to remember and retain information than they would through passive learning techniques.
