Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Douglas District Curriculum

Douglas Public Schools places great emphasis on STEM integration in its schools, with its vision being “to build STEM literacy through fostering an interdisciplinary approach to learning in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics are integrated in all subject areas and applied to real world contexts.” The goal is to develop 21st century learning skills in students through collaboration, creative thinking, and inquiry-based experiences. Ultimately, Douglas wants to cultivate students who can make a positive difference in their community.

Integration goals include increasing STEM literacy for ALL students (not just those who plan to pursue STEM-related careers, increase the achievement of every student, “inspire learning which benefits the common good,” help students relate science and technology to their everyday lives, and get students career-ready (no matter the career they ultimately choose). Learning expectations for STEM include working well independently and in diverse teams, planning and implementing investigations, carefully and critically evaluating information, constructing explanations and solutions, drawing data-based conclusions, and utilizing STEM skills.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Physical Education

Students have the opportunity to learn about physical fitness and health as part of the physical education curriculum. Children learn about wellness and what they can do to improve their overall physical fitness. Students learn about various physical activities, such as games and sports that allow them to stay physically active. Activities that promote muscular strength, circulatory health, cardiovascular health, and endurance are learned, with students developing advanced skills that allow them to take part in such activities in a healthy and safe manner. Dance and gymnastics help students acquire improved body control, while individual sports like tennis get kids active and moving around. Team sports like kickball and softball facilitate the development of teamwork and communication skills, while also teaching kids that physical activity is fun in addition to improving their overall health. Learners also identify the ways in which physical fitness requires them to behave in a manner that is both responsible and ethical.
