Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Douro-Dummer District Curriculum

In English, students build literacy and verbal communication skills that allow them to read analytically, recognize points of view, make connections between ideas, and gain knowledge from non-fiction texts. Writing is emphasized as it helps students develop reflective and analytic thinking, while gaining the ability to clearly communicate. When students are in secondary school, the English curriculum requires their ability to analyze, interpret, research and evaluate information effectively.

The Math curriculum brings about mathematic literacy and method-based skills starting with topics in numeracy and moving into topics like measurement and spatial relationships, charts and graphs, proportions, and algebraic thinking. Students begin to develop a range of knowledge in how to manipulate and analyze quantities that they are able to use reason and logic in their problem-solving. These advanced abilities which students fully realize during secondary school pave the way to success.

Chalk Talk: What Is EQAO?

The Education Quality and Accountability Office is a division of the Ministry of Education which exists to ensure that students are receiving a quality education and achieving the standards of learning. One way in which they do this is to have students take formal assessments in literacy and math throughout their school years to measure student proficiency within the subjects. These assessments can show how whole grades and whole schools are doing at raising students' academic success on traditional measures and the areas in which instruction may need to be focused.
