Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dover District Curriculum

The Dover School District curriculum is designed to ensure that each student who graduates from the district is equipped with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to be a successful and productive member of society. The Common Core State Standards outline what students should learn at each grade level in math and language arts. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards establish benchmarks for student learning in all other areas.

The district feels that students should have opportunities throughout their schooling to learn about the modern workforce and about potential careers. Students in the elementary grades begin by gaining an understanding of the skills needed to perform work in the 21st Century, such as problem-solving, decision-making and being technologically literate. Students in middle school take interest and career inventories to get a good idea of where their individual aptitudes and interests lie. In high school, students are required to select a career and develop a plan for gaining the necessary education and preparation.
