Chalk Talk: How to Pick the Right College

Choosing which college to attend is one of the most important decisions your child will make. Helping them determine where they will attend school can be made easier by following these steps. First, have your child make a short list of their top schools. The list should include three to five colleges of most interest. Once the list is created, help your child identify what it is about each school that led them to include it on their list. Reviewing their rationale can help them focus on their top pick. Second, have your child rank his or her priorities. Do they want an affordable school? One that’s close to home? One that has great student life opportunities? Recognizing what it is they are looking for can also help them make a determination. Lastly, if need be, go for a second campus visit. Oftentimes your child will have more insight and be in a position to ask more questions if they visit a school again.
