Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dryden District Curriculum

The expectations for Language Arts learning are not limited to reading and reading comprehension. Rather, they include other skills that can be applied to all subject areas, including skills such as researching texts, textual criticism, and communicating original ideas both verbally and in writing. Students are required to write opinion pieces about particular reading selections with proper evidence and citations. The writing portion of this curriculum includes the development of narrative, persuasive, and informative writing styles.

Students not only learn about operational ability, problem modeling, mathematic literacy, and quantitative reasoning, but they also learn how to apply these skills to solve problems that they encounter in classrooms and in the real world. The Common Core Math Standards also suggest ways in which to connect the subject to its many real world applications, including finance, technology and science.

Chalk Talk: Critical Thinking

Students who are capable of thinking critically are able to tell the difference between good information and bad information, figure out new ways to solve problems, and use their creativity to better their lives. Many school curricula and education standards mention critical thinking in passing, but few really present students with opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills. Schools and parents need to find new ways to foster critical thinking skills. They can require students to take part in simple role-playing games, or ask students to analyze books, films, and commercials. They encourage the creation of curricula that emphasize the development of critical thinking skills in all subject areas. Critical thinking is one of the most important skills that today’s students can possess. If they don’t learn how to think critically at home or school they will never learn how to do it.
