Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dumfries District Curriculum

Prince William County Public Schools want their schools to be proficient readers. This begins by using books such as “Brow Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” to teach the students colors. Stories are also used to teach or re-enforce topics learned in class. Students then learn about an author’s purpose and the elements of fiction. Students read a variety of books including folk tales and poetry. In their senior year, students are prepared to read and comprehend books such as “Kite Runner,” “Macbeth,” and “Canterbury Tales."

The Social Studies curriculum begins with students learning how there are rules that good citizens need to follow. This applies in the classroom, in the community, state and nation. They then go about learning the history of the governments that set up each of these places. Before they graduate, students learn about the importance of culture and geography in the establishment and running of countries around the world.

Chalk Talk: Kindergarten Writing

For many students kindergarten is the first time they will have any regular lessons on writing. Throughout this year students learn how to form letters and place sounds with the letters. They also learn how to gather, collect and share information while maintaining focus. This is the beginning of learning how to write chronologically and to recognize words found around them in their daily lives. It is easy to forget how important this year is in the development of future writers, but many of these children will learn to enjoy writing, which all began in kindergarten.
