Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dumont District Curriculum

The schools have developed a challenging curriculum that fosters the development of critical thinking, problem solving and analytic skills required of today’s students and workers. The comprehensive K-12 curriculum is aligned from the top-down, ensuring that learning experiences in lower grades lead nicely into learning experiences in higher grades.

The world languages curriculum provides students with the linguistic skills they need to study, work and live in our dynamic and interconnected global society, as well as the cultural understanding today’s citizens must have. Recognizing that Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the United States, the Dumont Public Schools offer it as the primary foreign language offering at the elementary and middle school levels. Chalk Talk: The Importance of Reading

Today’s kids read far less often than kids did even a decade ago. It can be difficult to find time in the day to accommodate leisure reading with school, homework, sports practice and after-school jobs taking up a large chunk of the day. But getting your child to read and read often is a vitally important task. Children who read often have much larger vocabularies and have the more highly-developed language skills tested by the SAT and ACT. Reading also helps children develop empathy - as they follow a character in a story, they identify with the character’s thoughts and feelings. Lastly, reading promotes relaxation. Kids have a lot of environmental stimulation these days, and often need some time to get away from it all and unplug. Sitting down with a good book for a few minutes is a great way for kids to slow down and take a break.
