Dunkirk District and Curriculum

Like all public schools in the State of New York, the Dunkirk City School District is in the process of adopting the Common Core Curriculum which was approved as the state curriculum by the New York State Board of Regents. Teachers within the district have been ‘Mapping to the Core’ or facilitating the process of making sure that the Core Curriculum is understood and followed. Participation in physical education and athletics are encouraged as classes and as extracurricular activities at Dunkirk schools as the district finds that sports teach students the importance of teamwork, self discipline, competitiveness and sportsmanship.

We currently cover the following Dunkirk-area school district: Dunkirk City School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dunkirk District Curriculum

In Mathematics, the instituting of Common Core means that students will focus on fewer math topics while placing an intense concentration on learning the core of mathematics such as whole numbers, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, equations, mathematical expressions, statistics, algebra and geometry. Research has shown that if students understand the basics of math they will be able to use their skills to be successful with higher math.

In English and Language Arts, there is also a focus on learning to read, write, listen and speak fluently in the English language. The core mastery of language arts skills are reinforced across all academic coursework. Writing is a major focus, and students are expected to learn ways to communicate their ideas to a variety of audience types. The Common Core Curriculum is based on providing an education that will be most helpful in preparing students for college and career.
