Durango District and Curriculum

The Durango School District follows the Colorado Academic Standards which provide a comprehensive series of learning objectives in each subject. Teachers are able to deliver these lessons in ways that best suit their students and all learning objectives are testable so that it can be determined that each child is achieving the targets for their education. Outside the classroom, the district encourages students to participate in extracurricular clubs and athletics so that they experience a well-rounded education.

We currently cover the following Durango-area school district: Durango School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Durango District Curriculum

The elementary curriculum is designed to introduce students to the foundation fo knowledge they will need in all core subjects. In math, teachers must follow a pre-set sequence of specific mathematics topics. In literacy, students learn basic reading and writing techniques in elementary school, then advance to critical thinking in middle and high school. The elementary social studies standards are broken down into various areas such as geography, economics, and culture. Basic social skills are also introduced, so students are prepared for kindergarten.

Once in high school, the students have reached a place where a greater level of analysis and critical thinking skill is central to their success. The language arts curriculum is centered on the literacy and communication skills necessary to read any type of text, and be able to discuss and write about it critically. In high school mathematics, students are encouraged to take all types of upper level courses, and many Honors Level and Advanced Placement math classes are offered.

Chalk Talk: Teaching to Different Learning Styles

Discussion of student learning styles and how to teach to each student is a perennial fixture of educational discussion. Traditionally, classroom experiences are most-suited for visual learners - the reading, taking notes from the board, writing about what has been read - all come naturally to visual learners. Students who are kinesthetic learners, or who learn best through hands-on means, often don't do as well in this environment and so the goal is to increase awareness about learning styles, and make sure students have an experience that balances the strengths and weaknesses in their learning style. Oftentimes, taking a topic and teaching in different modes - teaching the lesson to maximize visual functions of the mind as well as teaching it to maximize the kinesthetic strengths of the mind - can be most effective. For students who learn in different ways, these alternative methods can be so helpful and can teach the knowledge for more than just the purpose of passing a test. These methods can help students remember the material longer because of their interaction with it.
