Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Easley District Curriculum

The Common Core English Language Arts standards require students to study both literature and non-fiction works. Students should be able to read, understand, and write about a variety of genres which will prepare them for future success. They are expected to discuss and present their critical thoughts on the fiction and non-fiction which they read. Writing involves analytic responses to literature and informational texts, as well as creative and persuasive forms of writing and students learn about the process of writing from outlining to final presentation.

In Math, students are asked to delve deeper into the concepts in order to have a well-rounded mastery of each particular skill before moving on to the next standard. In the elementary grades, students learn the basics of numerical operations, fractions, ratios and probabilities as well as patterning, shape recognition, and spatial awareness. This is the foundation for algebra, geometry, statistics and other advanced topics in mathematics which they will take in high school and college.

Chalk Talk: Getting the Most Out of Homework Time

For many families, homework can be a challenge. It is difficult to get children to sit down after spending the day at school. To combat this problem, consider planning a family wide quite hour. Turn off the television, music, and the like and invite everyone to spend time quietly working on homework or reading. Do this at the same time each day so your children expect it to happen. Finally, invite EVERY member of the family to join in. Children who are not school aged yet can be looking at picture books or coloring, and adults can model learning by reading.
