Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Hampton District Curriculum

The curriculum consists of benchmarked, rigorous standards intended to provide students with a comprehensive, high quality education. Students are challenged with clear expectations of what information they should’ve learned by the end of each year. They’re given support to help them catch up to grade level if they need it. Clear expectations are spelled out at each grade level so that by the end of school year, students are reaching measurable learning objectives.

East Hampton Public Schools Public utilizes the Connecticut Common Core State Standards in Reading and Mathematics and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium for student assessment. Curriculum overviews contain the mastery goals for each grade level. Authentic assessments are also used in class and allow students more creativity in showing their mastery of a subject. In all courses, students are taught to go back over, review and reflect on their work.

Chalk Talk: Hidden Costs

Prospective students are well aware of the cost off college tuition at the particular college they plan to attend, but this is just one, though definitely the largest, of many college costs, and these additional costs can increase the price of college attendance dramatically. Housing is another major cost. Most incoming freshmen are required to live in dorms. This is actually beneficial in many ways, not least of which is the fact that dorms tend to be cheaper than apartments. But renting an apartment with roommates might be comparable. Transportation and parking can be additional costs, especially when living off-campus. Some classes might require books that cost a hundred dollars. At the end of the term, students can sell them back, usually, but they won’t get anything like what they paid for them. Renting books can be cheaper, and with more and more colleges putting content online, this is becoming more and more common.
