Chalk Talk: Advantages and Disadvantages of E-Textbooks

Some public school districts have made the move from traditional textbooks to e-textbooks. This change has been undertaken in part because e-textbooks don’t require a continual budget to upkeep and replace old books, offering significant financial savings. Because e-books are displayed on laptops, tablets, and e-readers, students no longer have to carry around a backpack full of heavy textbooks either. Additionally, as e-textbooks have become more and more sophisticated, they allow kids to highlight passages, bookmark pages, look up unfamiliar words, and connect to online content related to their reading. However, there are some disadvantages. Some e-textbooks cannot be purchased in perpetuity, but rather expire after a specific period of time. Additionally, some e-textbooks can only be accessed from one device, so if a student forgets his or her tablet at school they may be unable to access their e-textbook on their home computer.
