Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Eldersburg District Curriculum

As part of the Eldersburg technology curriculum, students acquire computer literacy skills that will benefit them in school, at work, and in life in general. Students work with word processing software to create text documents, learning how to utilize keyboard shortcuts to access common features and format documents appropriately. Desktop publishing programs are also used to teach students how to create fliers, brochures, and other visual aid materials. Students explore informational databases as well, and acquire the ability to create, populate, and manage spreadsheets.

The elementary-level social studies curriculum provides a sound basis for students to build their knowledge of history, geography, government, and economics. Learners develop a basic understanding of laws, how laws are created, and the manner in which laws are enforced by authorities and interpreted by courts. Students discuss their rights and responsibilities as citizens, as well as how the choices they make can impact others in the community in a positive or negative manner.

Chalk Talk: Why Schools Need Involved Parents

If children are to achieve the success in school that they are capable of, the partnership between schools and parents must be strong. Learning cannot only take place during the school day, rather, it must continue at home with your support. Children who have parents that are involved in the educational process achieve better grades on individual assignments and exams. They also outperform their peers on standardized measures of reading and math. With involved parents at home, children are more likely to complete their homework on time, have reduced discipline issues at school, and miss fewer days of school overall. Children also exhibit improved attitudes about school, have more motivation to learn, and have higher self-esteem if their parents take an active role in their education.
