Elk District and Curriculum

Elk City Schools in Oklahoma has a mission to promote lifelong learning in all of the students, and to ensure success in an ever-changing world. The core curriculum of English Language Arts and Mathematics are taught by the instructors of the school, as well as History, Science, and many variations of elective courses. The curriculum has been developed by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

We currently cover the following Elk-area school district: Elk City Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elk District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the students learn standards such as story elements in the areas of problem-solution and cause and effect. The students, when reading fiction and non-fiction selections, are taught to identify the “problem” within the story; usually a problem the main character is facing. By the end of the story, the learners are taught to be able to identify the solution.

The mathematics program is widespread and is a spiraling curriculum. The teachers teach concepts such as patterning beginning in the early grades. The pattern standard of learning begins with simple patterns using two colors or two shapes. From there, it progresses to three colors or shapes, and then the instructor usually adds other objects, such as small manipulatives to the mix. As the children progress in grade levels, the pattern objective becomes more challenging, as the students use numbers, more complex shapes and objects combined.

Chalk Talk: The Early Childhood Educator

The Early Childhood Educator is an integral part of the school system. Usually throughout the school year, the early childhood educator meets with parents and small children to evaluate them and check their development. If the teacher feels that the child needs early intervention, the child is enrolled in an early childhood program. The educator of the children helps develop their physical and academic skills to better prepare them for kindergarten or another pre-school program. Getting the students “caught-up” developmentally can be done very successfully through early intervention, and the early childhood educator is the professional to aid in the success of these children.
