The social studies curriculum helps students devise a better understanding of the structure and function of our nation’s government. For high school students, the study of government begins with its foundations, including an examination of the Founding Fathers and their ideas for how the country’s government should be structured. Concepts like checks and balances, separation of powers, and federalism are all explored in detail. Learners explore documents like the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, learning about the core principles upon which our democracy was founded. Major Supreme Court decisions are analyzed, with students identifying the cases that have had the most impact on the powers of government, responsibilities of citizens, and rights of the accused.

The high school health curriculum provides students with insights into various aspects of leading a life of wellness. Students learn about nutrition as a foundational concept of wellness. Learners analyze the value of eating right and explore the positive impacts eating right has on one’s mental and physical health. High school students also learn about effective personal skills, such as communication and relationship building.

Chalk Talk: Three Tips for Getting More Financial Aid

The first step in the financial aid process is filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used to determine your child’s financial aid eligibility, and is used by colleges and universities to build offers for aid. There are several tricks to ensuring that you get the most money you can when you file the FAFSA. First, file as early as possible. Some schools provide financial aid on a first come, first served basis, so a timely application is necessary. Second, be sure the document is filled out in its entirety. Unfortunately, each year, many students do not get the aid they need because something is omitted or isn’t filled out correctly on the FAFSA. Lastly, consider submitting a supplementary statement with your FAFSA in order to explain any special family circumstances. Although there are more than 100 questions on the FAFSA, there isn’t an opportunity to discuss medical bills, job loss, or other serious financial issues.
