Elliot Lake District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Elliot Lake follow the Ontario Curriculum which has been developed to provide a comprehensive overview to all the subjects and programs the students have available. The curriculum does not designate any particular instructional approaches and allows teachers to design assessments that allow students to show what they are able to do. The foundational subjects of Math, Science, and English are central to student’s ability to learn in other areas and in the innovative programs offered in secondary school. The framework for each is designed so that students are able to apply what they are learning in all areas of life.

We currently cover the following Elliot Lake-area school districts: Algoma District School Board and Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elliot Lake District Curriculum

Math develops students to determine measurements and quantities, to analyze the information they obtain, to understand complex relationships in geometric functions or algebraic operations, and be able to communicate their processes for determining solutions to problems. English offers students both general literacy skills and an opportunity to study the craft of literature and writing. Students learn about conducting research, analytically viewing media, and how to organize their thoughts into a meaningful piece of work.

In Science, students are expected to develop a broad scientific foundation in which they have knowledge and the ability to investigate topics such as earth science, life sciences, physical forces and energy. The courses at the secondary level cover Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Physics and ask students to understand complex principles in each topic. In technology, students identify the ways in which technology can improve productivity. Students learn how utilize computers and software programs to create multimedia presentations, manipulate photographs and graphics, and create databases.

  • Aboriginal Initiatives - The Aboriginal Initiatives are educational policies aimed at providing relevant classes and increasing achievement for First Nation students by focusing on the language, culture, history, and arts of aboriginal students. These initiatives are also aimed at non-aboriginal students interested in increasing their cultural knowledge.
  • Resource-Based Learning - Resource-based learning is a policy that is being developed in conjunction with the media resources department at Huron Superior Catholic District. The goal is to get as many useful resources into the hands of classroom teachers and work on finding ways to tailor the use of resources to the best learning outcomes for students. Chalk Talk: Why Community College Is a Good Choice

Community college offers many students opportunities to get an education who might not otherwise be able to do so. Classes at a community college are far more affordable than the same courses at a university, costing just a fraction of the price. Class sizes at community colleges are generally much smaller than those at four-year institutions as well. This facilitates more personalized attention from professors, which can be extremely beneficial for students who are struggling. Students that don’t have the best grades coming out of high school can also utilize their time at community college to further develop their academic skills and become a more successful student. For more advanced students, community college offers many in-demand majors and certificate programs in industries like health care and technology. With some associate’s degree and certificate programs leading to high paying jobs immediately upon graduation, community college is a great choice for students who want to begin their professional career sooner rather than later.
