Chalk Talk: Why Kids Need Sports

While the focus of K-12 education should be on acquiring the academic skills, knowledge, and tools required for success in college and career, sports offer many opportunities for learning and offer benefits for students as well. Being a member of a sports team facilitates the development of critical communication and collaboration skills necessary for most careers. With goal-setting an inherent aspect of being an athlete, students must also learn how to set attainable goals and work hard to reach them. Athletes must learn to manage their time wisely as well. This is particularly important for student-athletes who have many demands on their time, but who must also put in the appropriate time and effort in order to be successful in the classroom and on the field. Sports are also a great way to boost a child’s self-esteem. Studies show that the slow but steady improvement in skills over the course of an athletic season helps students feel a sense of accomplishment and gain confidence.
