Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elmont District Curriculum

Elmont also has a world languages curriculum that prepares students to be effective communicators in a language other than English. There is a primary focus on speaking and listening skills as they pertain to the development of language skills. Students learn basic elements of a second language, including common words, phrases, and terminology. These skills are practiced in a variety of settings, including in one-on-one conversations with other students and presentations to classmates. Students acquire the ability to use the context of their conversations to derive meanings of unfamiliar words.

Students in Elmont learn valuable lessons with regard to physical education. Personal health and fitness is a central component of the P.E. curriculum. In this strand, children develop a capacity for basic motor skills. These include the gross motor skills necessary to run, jump, and play, as well as fine motor skills necessary to manipulate sports equipment and demonstrate body control when balancing. Physical fitness skills are developed such that students have the capacity to undertake physical activities without injury.

Elmont District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Elmont’s students in kindergarten through the sixth grade attend classes in the Elmont Union Free School District. The district includes over 4,000 students and six school buildings. Children in grades 7-12 attend Sewanhaka Central High School District, which has nearly 9,000 students dispersed between five school buildings. Both districts demonstrate a commitment to educational excellence. Students are held to high academic standards, and are challenged by the curricula that each district has adopted. Learning experiences are both rigorous and relevant to the needs of life and work in the modern world. Students in both districts represent a wide variety of sociocultural backgrounds, lending a multicultural tone to the educational landscape in Elmont. Both school districts are widely regarded for their emphasis on developing students that are well educated and skillful. Sewanhaka Central High School District is also held in high regard for their innovative and comprehensive career and technical programming.

Chalk Talk: Why Kids Need Sports

While the focus of K-12 education should be on acquiring the academic skills, knowledge, and tools required for success in college and career, sports offer many opportunities for learning and offer benefits for students as well. Being a member of a sports team facilitates the development of critical communication and collaboration skills necessary for most careers. With goal-setting an inherent aspect of being an athlete, students must also learn how to set attainable goals and work hard to reach them. Athletes must learn to manage their time wisely as well. This is particularly important for student-athletes who have many demands on their time, but who must also put in the appropriate time and effort in order to be successful in the classroom and on the field. Sports are also a great way to boost a child’s self-esteem. Studies show that the slow but steady improvement in skills over the course of an athletic season helps students feel a sense of accomplishment and gain confidence.
