Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ennis District Curriculum

Students at Ennis schools learn that reading is used throughout their everyday lives. The early years of their education is spent learning to read. This includes building a sight word vocabulary and discovering different aspects of a piece of reading. The students then begin to use reading to learn, as they find the tools they have in their foundation can be applied to other subject areas. They learn how to analyze and discuss different types of texts, and value and reference the ideas of others.

Science, at Ennis Schools, show students the parts of their environment, shows how they work together and how the students can take care of it. First the students learn about the different parts of nature, such as plants, weather or water. Then they explore how changing one of these factors can change the others. They see how changing the temperature, or water, by a small amount can kill some life while encouraging other to take over. By seeing how changes can affect an area, students come away with a better idea of the functions of science in the world.

Chalk Talk: Life In Fourth Grade

When a student enters the fourth grade, emphasis begins to shift from group work to more independent work. By this grade, homework is usually a staple and there will be some assignments that will carry over for a period of time. To help a child in this year parents can talk to their children about what is being read and model reading behavior at home. Children at this age are generally beginning to write essays in class. To help with their skills, parents can encourage children to practice at home, perhaps by sending emails to loved ones. In math, students are beginning to work more with fractions and decimals. This can be encouraged by including them in a cooking lesson. Finally social studies and science seem to be good subjects to integrate others in. Students may be expected to do calculations in science and research in social studies. Most important for parents is to be available is a child has questions or concerns, assist them but make sure that the assignment is their own work.
