Ewa Gentry District and Curriculum

The Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) and Ewa Gentry-area schools are not only interested in providing learning for the short term – they are also deeply committed to producing students with an edge in post-secondary education and the job market. To this end, the DOE and Ewa Gentry-area schools are making the shift to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS); full implementation across all grade levels is expected to be complete by the 2013-2014 school year.

We currently cover the following Ewa Gentry-area school district: Hawaii Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ewa Gentry District Curriculum

The biggest difference in curriculum that Ewa Gentry-area schools will see involves Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA). While education in these subjects has traditionally focused on memorization and task achievement, the CCSS seeks to provide instruction that is critically, analytically, and logically focused. In Math, students will demonstrate that they understand the principles behind equations. In ELA, students will be tasked with reflective writing, critical readings of all types of texts, and understanding academic vocabulary.

Because the DOE also understands that learning is becoming more and more digitally enhanced, Ewa Gentry-area schools will focus on integrating technology into the classroom and into learning materials. By implementing digital devices and services into the curriculum, the DOE hopes to prepare students for post-secondary success, remove outdated print materials, and offer extra opportunities for personalized learning.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Extracurricular Activities

Students can learn many new things in the classroom, but learning doesn’t have to stop when the school bell rings. Extracurricular activities are a great way for students to learn more about the subjects that interest them -- and to connect with others who share the same passions. These activities, often sponsored by schools or community organizations, are also beneficial in another important way. Colleges look for applicants who are well-rounded, show a personal interest in learning, and put time and effort into following their interests. Being able to include extracurricular activities on a college application often makes a candidate stand out as a student who wants to learn.
