Fairbault District and Curriculum

The primary mission of Faribault Public Schools is to empower, engage, and energize its students. Using these qualities, the faculty and staff of the school district, in partnership with families and community stakeholders, is able to create a rich learning environment for students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade. All students in Faribault are expected to achieve their highest possible potential. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fairbault District Curriculum

High school social studies students in Faribault develop a keen understanding of citizenship and government as part of the social studies curriculum. Students learn about various systems of government, particularly democracy. Learners identify the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy, noting as well the duty of citizens to keep informed in order to guide their political decision-making. Various social problems are examined, which students seek to resolve using analysis, inquiry, and evidence. A variety principles of democratic government are explored as well.

Part of the Minnesota math curriculum is to familiarize elementary-aged students with numbers and operations. Kindergarten math students learn how to recognize numbers, read them, and write them, from 0 to 31. Children also acquire the ability to count forwards and backwards to at least 20. Students discover how to compare numbers, noting which number in a pair is greater than or less than the other. Proper numerical order is also emphasized.

Keeping Informed: Recent Fairbault Educational News

  • District Working on 1:1 Initiative for Students - In order to better prepare students for the highly technological world in which we live, Faribault School District is finalizing plans for a 1:1 technology initiative. The plan would involve purchasing iPads for students to use for their schoolwork.
  • Families Can Donate Box Tops for Education - Students at Cannon River Educational Center are collecting box tops for education. Money collected from the box tops goes toward funding school projects and programs. Administrators use it to supplement budgets for extracurriculars and other resources.
  • Positive Behavior Program Showing Great Success - Students at Faribault Middle School participate in a positive behavior program called SOAR. The purpose of the program is to more deeply engage student in their learning while also improving the school environment. Through the program, students are rewarded and encouraged for their positive behaviors rather than just focusing on fixing negative behaviors.

Race to the Top is a program established by the Obama Administration to boost achievement in public schools. Specifically, the program seeks to address several major areas. First, improved assessments are required, as are more rigorous standards of learning for K-12 students. Second, the program seeks to provide increased support for schools that are failing in order to turn them around. A third component of the program is improved support and resources for classroom teachers to promote more effective teaching strategies. Lastly, Race to the Top seeks to develop a comprehensive evaluation system that better tracks student progress. The evaluation system would likewise track teacher progress and measure their effectiveness.
