Fairfax District and Curriculum
The California Content and Core Curriculum Standards provide the framework for the instructional processes at the districts for Fowler’s students. These are curricular framework developed with many purposes in mind: students are intended to achieve a deep knowledge base along with the thinking skills that arise from each subject, the standards and expectations for learning are intended to be clear so that all students receive the same high quality expectations, and the learning should be measurable through assessments that accurately reflect what students should have learned in their classes.
Math and Language Arts are considered core classes because the basics, and increasingly complex knowledge, which students develop in each class supports all other content areas. In Math, problem-solving methods are taught so that students can approach a problem and select from a number of different approaches to solve it. Abstract and quantitative reasoning are developed through the operations, functions, patterns, and structures that students begin to recognize.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fairfax District Curriculum
The core subjects are at the heart of expectations for student learning, however there are no limits to the instructional approaches that can be taken. Students learn in a variety of different ways, some enjoy inquiry-based learning, while others do well with direct instruction and opportunities to apply that learning. However, all students are expected to become proficient in their core classes because they lay the foundation needed to be prepared for college, career, and daily life.
In Language Arts, the focus is on language and communication with the goal of making students critical readers who are able to express themselves clearly in writing. Writing is one of the major strands in the curriculum and students will write reflectively, creatively, and in forms like expository, or informational, and persuasive. The Language Arts curriculum does specify grade-level expectations in grammar and conventions of the language.

- Multi-Age Program - The Multi-Age Program (MAP) is a program at Manor Elementary School for students in grades K-5. The classroom are structured so that students in two grades work together, experiencing learning with the same teacher, over the course of a two year period. This extended time frame helps students settle into the routines and expectations and be free to concentrate on their core academics.
- SchoolPoolMarin.org - SchoolPoolMarin.org is an online resource for parents in the county who want to share the responsibilities of transportation for their students. Families are able to plan for students that walk, bike and, of course, car pools. Besides being an efficient and environmentally-friendly way to provide this daily transportation, the relationships that form can be invaluable.
- Sustainable Fairfax - Sustainable Fairfax is a community organization that is working towards a number of initiatives for environmental programs like the goal of reaching zero-waste by 2020. The organization provides resources to the community, and projects and events for community-members to participate in. For students interested in studying environmental science, Sustainable Fairfax would be a great resource for enrichment programs in the subject.
