Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fairland District Curriculum

Students in Fairland have the opportunity to learn a second language as part of the world languages curriculum. Students begin their language study by engaging in brief conversations in the target language. This includes the appropriate use of common words, phrases, and parts of speech. From there, students move on to presenting information in the past, present, and future tenses. To practice this skill, students ask and answer questions, write short messages, and give or follow directions. To acquire advanced skills, learners write in the target language for a variety of purposes, including to provide information, and take part in more complex conversations that require a give and take with other people.

The Fairland math curriculum culminates in high school with courses like Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Students in the Algebra I class study the relationships between quantities and learn how to reason using equations. Learners acquire the ability to reason quantitatively, while also interpreting the structure of expressions. Students work with systems of equations as well. Learners use different representations to solve problems, and also create new functions.

Chalk Talk: Get Your Child Involved in Sports

Participation in sports offers a number of benefits to school-aged children. First, sports get kids up and moving. This physical activity is important for helping develop fine and gross motor skills, as well as combatting poor health conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Second, team sports give kids a chance to develop communication and teamwork skills, as well as form friendships with children from other grades or other schools. Third, kids that participate in sports develop enhanced time management skills. Having to balance schoolwork, practice, family time, and other obligations is a great way for kids to learn about managing their time wisely. Lastly, sports give kids a chance to have fun and just be kids! The energy they burn off while on the field of play is a great stress reliever and will also give you a little more peace and quiet at home.
