Farmington District and Curriculum

Farmington Public Schools follow the Common Core Standard of curriculum. These standards have been adopted by over 40 states in the US and strive to bring students the level of rigor and critical thinking skills necessary to compete in college, as well as the global workforce. There is not only an emphasis on education but also on developing the whole student. All schools strive to create not only global awareness but self-awareness as well so that they will have the know-how to be successful and become lifelong learners.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Farmington District Curriculum

These standards take the English Language Arts and put a heavy focus on general literacy skills. Starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school graduation, the language arts program seeks to create students who have strong vocabulary as well as the ability to read critically and understand written language. Spelling, grammar, and even public speaking are also part of the curriculum.

Mathematics and Science focus on increasing rigor as well. They have scaled down the number of lessons required each year and instead seek to allow students the time to truly gain a deep understanding of each topic before building to the next. This gives students more than just a rogue or surface understanding, but allows them to internalize the lessons and understand them. They will carry the skills of scientific understanding and mathematic reasoning throughout all of their educational years and into many aspects of life beyond school.

Chalk Talk: Sending Them Off to College

So... finally your teenager has graduated high school. Twelve long years of preparation and in a couple short months they will be off to college. It’s important to try to squeeze in a few last minutes lessons if your budding young adults will let you that is. A crucial lesson is learning to understand money. Some lucky teens have parents who are able to provide everything for them as they spend their first years away from home. From support emotionally to financially, parents feel as though they are doing their job by continuing to do everything for the kids. Learning how to budget and keep spending under control, however, is something that will be invaluable for years to come. It’s a life lesson we all must learn, so in the last few months of summer, take the opportunity to teach them how to balance school, work, money and friends.
