Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Farmington Hills District Curriculum

Farmington School District offers a challenging curriculum that prepares students for a 21st century global economy. In the early years, the Language Arts curriculum uses authentic texts to teach comprehension and also focuses on teaching critical thinking and collaboration skills. Writing is taught across the curriculum and practiced in all subjects. The Math curriculum uses hands-on learning and real-world experiences to teach critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

At the high school level, students are challenged even more. The district offers an expanding Advanced Placement program and over half the student population passes at least one AP test by graduation. Farmington School District also offers a variety of electives through their participation in the Michigan Career Pathways program and the dual enrollment program also gives students the option of taking college classes for high school credit. Just like in the lower grades, curriculum in the high school prepares students for a life outside of school.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a Career That is Right For You

There are many different factors to consider when choosing a career. First, decide what interests you and find careers that build on those interests. The Internet and library are great research tools for this step. Consider your own temperament and talents next to decide which jobs will suit you. For example, if you love music but don’t like performing, you might decide a behind-the-scenes career in sound engineering is a good fit for you. Lastly, consider personal preferences. Decide on things like how much travel you would like to where you want to live. Questions like these should also play a role in career choice. Whatever you decide, it is important to start thinking about a career early on.
