Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Farmington District Curriculum

The hope is that students become interested in their own educations and take charge of their learning. Engaged students are more likely to take part in their communities and to succeed academically and in other areas. The curriculum at Farmington High School’s stress critical thinking skills, critical reading skills, and analytical writing. It also introduces real-world applications of scientific and mathematical principles.

Students are exposed to complex texts, taught to evaluate and understand them, and asked to write intelligently about them. In analytical essays, students must use direct evidence and quotes to support their arguments and assertions. Mathematics classes focus on having students investigate and can understand how and why mathematics principles work, instead of just memorizing them. This way, students will have a firm foundation of mathematical logic and reasoning on which to build for the future.

Chalk Talk: What Is a Personal Statement?

Colleges ask for certain essays to accompany applications for admission. Some of these are short answer questions that might only require a paragraph. One of the most confusing and difficult seeming ones is the Personal Statement. The reason it can be so stressful is that it isn’t a clearly defined essay, and this may well be part of its purpose. A Personal Statement is simply a short essay intended to demonstrate certain qualities in the applicant, such as personal interests, educational interests, work ethic, and the like. Because Personal Statements aren’t clearly explained prompts, some students will write meandering essays without a narrative thrust.
