Chalk Talk: The Importance of Gifted Education

Students that demonstrate exceptional academic or creative abilities are sometimes left without pathways to more challenging learning opportunities or to explore their interests in more depth. Sometimes these unchallenged kids can grow bored in regular education classrooms without an appropriate level of rigor, with the result being a child that has mentally checked out. In fact, research has shown that the dropout rate for gifted children is between 18-25%, and that the majority of kids that choose to leave school do so because they aren’t given assignments that are engaging. Gifted and Talented programs help keep exceptional learners engrossed in education by offering them learning opportunities that are aligned to their ability, not their age. This could take the form of accelerated coursework, skipping a grade or testing out of classes, or attendance in a gifted program, such as one specific for the arts or sciences. The result is differentiated instruction that meets the increased needs of gifted students.
