Fergus Falls District and Curriculum

“Where excellence is expected” is the motto of Fergus Falls Public Schools. This mantra is applied to all aspects of the educational process, from the way that students perform academically, to the manner in which they behave, to the ways in which teachers prepare lessons and conduct their classrooms. This commitment to excellence ensures that all stakeholders are prepared to put their best effort into teaching and learning. The result of this commitment is a student body that has the academic knowledge and skills, the social skills, and the emotional skills to be successful in all aspects of life. This is particularly important as students prepare to enter college or the workforce in our dynamic, highly globalized world.

We currently cover the following Fergus Falls-area school district: Fergus Falls Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fergus Falls District Curriculum

A primary feature of the high school English language arts curriculum in Fergus Falls is the emphasis on developing an understanding of the writing process. Students undertake writing projects, with the planning, drafting, writing, and editing processes a part of that process. Learners acquire the ability to write in a style that is appropriate to the task as well, including tailoring their writing to a specific audience. Developing a clear writing style is also a point of study in this curriculum.

As part of the Fergus Falls Science curriculum, students learn about a variety of concepts related to earth space science. An exploration of the earth’s layers is undertaken, with learners developing an understanding of the properties of the lithosphere, mantle, and core. Volcanic and seismic activity is studied as well. Students identify the location of ocean trenches, ridges, and mountain ranges and associate the presence of those features with the presence of volcanic activity. Processes by which landforms are created are also examined.

Chalk Talk: Writing a College Essay

Some colleges require prospective students to write an essay as part of the application process. To ensure their best opportunity to gain admittance, students must produce an essay that is engaging and well written. College essays should be concise as well. With so many essays to read, admissions officers don’t want dozens of pages to read from one student. Instead, students should endeavor to address all aspects of the essay in a succinct manner. Students should also use strategies that help them stand out from the crowd. For some, this means taking a humorous tone. For others, it means telling a fantastic story. One thing for students to remember, though, is to not sound so stiff or over-confident; admissions officers want to be impressed and confident in their choice of students. Whatever approach your child takes, they need to ensure their essay is vivid and memorable.
