Fernadale District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum and instruction team at Ferndale School District has developed four focus areas essential for student success at all grade levels. The team focuses on professional collaboration, common assessments, instructional frameworks, and tracking of student progress. This is a cyclical model that is always using data retrieved from common assessments to modify curriculum and/or instruction when necessary. Foundational skills in reading, writing, math and science are the focus of elementary curriculum in the district. Students learn the fundamentals of reading and reading comprehension, number sense, arithmetic, and the nature of science. As they progress through their elementary curriculum, students hone these skills in each grade level.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ferndale District Curriculum

Fernadale School District’s technology curriculum seeks to help students develop a better understanding of the growth and role of technology in our everyday lives. Students explore how technology is rapidly changing and leading to advanced developments in the areas of education, communication, and manufacturing, to name a few. How students can harness the power of technology to expand their ability to learn is another primary topic of study. Students learn how to utilize computers, the Internet, and various computer programs to investigate and learn about new topics and ideas.

In middle school and high school, the curriculum focus shifts to content and the ability to work at analytic levels with the learning materials. Students apply their fundamental English, Math, and Science skills to classes such as literature, poetry, physical science, life science, algebra and geometry. Classes are available for advanced students and students who need remediation at both the middle and high school levels.

Chalk Talk: Taking Their Time during Assignments

Teaching children to take their time when doing homework helps sets them up for a successful life. When a child hurries through their assignment, sloppy work and mistakes are often the results. Parents can help by letting the child know that hurrying through their work is not right. Talk with the teacher about working together to help improve the child’s homework. Then let the child know about this cooperation with the teacher. When the child does their work, make sure that they check over their work for any revising that may need done. It is also a good idea to set a time every day when school work is to be done. If the child finishes early, they should use the remaining time to review material and to check homework. Finally, parents need to model what they would like the child to do. This means if something does not work out, show the child how things may need to be redone, even by grown-ups.
