Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Firestone District Curriculum

The St. Vrain Valley School District Department of Curriculum and Instruction has developed a series of curricula that are relevant to the demands of living in today’s modern world. Included in the curricula is the study of science. The MESA program, or Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement, gets students involved in exciting scientific studies and experiments that promote the pursuit of a science degree in college and scientific-based careers.

The social studies curriculum focuses on linking past events with the present. With regard to American history, this involves an examination of the influences that Native American culture has had on law-making in the United States. Students also acquire an understanding of social, cultural, political, and economic events that influence the decision-making of individuals and governments. In those contexts, students learn about international relations and why some countries form strong alliances and why others have very cold relationships.

Chalk Talk: Value of Community Service

Kids that volunteer their time for the betterment of others reap many benefits themselves. In addition to learning new skills and exploring potential career areas, volunteerism allows children to learn about themselves and about the community in which they live. It brings them a sense of self-satisfaction which they earned. Making a difference in someone else’s life gives volunteers positive feelings of self-worth and strengthens relationships. Participating in community service is also good for kids’ physical and mental health. According to studies, volunteerism reduces stress, improves mood, and helps strengthen the immune system. For children, volunteering also represents a valuable transition to being successful at joining new activities or groups; later in life they will fall back on their experiences of joining a volunteer effort for many other types of activities.
